It requires skills of observation and interpretation that help us understand the people that we want to serve. More than this, however, designers must also understand the technological issues that stand behind effective products. They must understand the materials, tools, and production processes of the modern world. An education in design is an education for the mind as well as the eye and hand. Recognizing that some of the most meaningful learning often happens during impromptu conversations, we encourage those interactions in a comfortable environment that facilitates healthy, enjoyable, and effective learning.
Engineering Design Innovation and Entrepreneurship (EDIE)
The Cut was formed by filling in a ravine (hence the name) with soil from a nearby hill that was leveled to build the College of Fine Arts building. In addition to the mechanics of using a camera, Design Photography teaches students how to effectively capture images that convey meaning and tell a story. Businesses, government, and local communities are turning to designers for innovation and problem-solving, creating new roles for designers in every sector of the marketplace. Here the technical meets the physical, as you explore the process of embedding computing within artifacts, in contexts that range from mobile environments to built environments, to new instruments for creative practice.

Beginning in the mid-1990’s, the School of Design was one of the first programs worldwide to offer a master’s degree in interaction design. Carnegie Mellon's Information Networking Institute offers graduate programs in Athens, Greece and Kobe, Japan, in collaboration with Athens Information Technology and the Hyogo Institute of Information Education Foundation, respectively. In the fall of 2007, the cities of Aveiro and Lisbon, Portugal were added to the Information Networking Institute's remote locations. Often, thinking about something theoretically and actually seeing it in use can be very different.
