Students are asked to bring a camera, and we prefer that you have a camera other than your smartphone. If you have access to an older camera that is at least 10 megapixels in which you can manually operate the focus, aperture, and shutter settings, you will be fine. Independent study is permitted only in the third and fourth years of the program. Proposals for independent study courses must be developed jointly by the student and a faculty advisor. The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University is a leader in the evolution of design research, practice, and education.

Program Overview

Our alumni acquire some of the most desirable positions in the field, with multinational companies, design firms, and nonprofits. Some of our alumni become design researchers and educators, and others start their own businesses. In addition, if you are an international student who seeks employment in the United States post-graduation, the STEM designation of our master’s programs may improve your opportunities. Whatever your focus, we are confident that our graduate programs will prepare you for entry into top jobs at leading companies and organizations.

International Students

This minor explores technology from a different angle, teaching you what it takes to animate soft materials and matter, as you draw from the disciplines of costumery, computer science, arts and design, engineering, materials science, robotics and textiles. You’ll shape and fashion a wide range of soft matter and materials into artifacts and applications ranging from novel to practical — creating forms that can shape-shift, adapt and transform in response to the human body. In this minor, offered by the Tepper School of Business, you’ll have the chance to combine disciplinary expertise with multidisciplinary perspectives to address real-world challenges. You’ll collaborate with other students in hands-on work, gaining the knowledge and skills to develop products and services that change society for the better. You’ll master the art, craft and science of games as you learn what it takes to design your own.

The Makers’ KUbe embodies the university’s commitment to a sustainable future. Preserving existing buildings and using low-carbon timber construction minimizes the project’s environmental impact. Additionally, rooftop photovoltaic panels generate clean energy, while a rainwater harvesting system reduces the reliance on municipal water. The Makers’ KUbe joins BIG’s growing portfolio of innovative educational spaces, including UMass Amherst’s Isenberg Innovation Hub and the upcoming Johns Hopkins University Student Center and Claremont McKenna College’s Robert Day Sciences Center.

The university's Software Engineering Institute also houses a research library. It also has graduate-level extension campuses in Mountain View, California in the heart of Silicon Valley (offering masters programs in Software Engineering and Software Management). The Tepper School of Business maintains a satellite center in downtown Manhattan and the Heinz College maintains one in Adelaide, Australia.

Our hope is that web designers and developers chime in (post to social media, write blog posts) with your thoughts about which direction CSS should take. A handful of other recent articles can be medium-sized and span two columns. Let’s let go of thinking about “masonry”, and start imagining Grid Level 3 purely as an expansion of Grid. Students in Design for Learning courses can bring media-making and prototyping competencies gained in other IDeATe areas (e.g. Game Design, Media Design, Physical Computing, Immersive Technologies in Arts & Humanities) to craft innovative learning experiences.

Our faculty members bring an array of impressive skill sets from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds. They’re known experts in products (industrial design), communications, and environments design and leading authorities in design research, fine art, philosophy, human-computer interaction, and business. They also have a solid history of successful collaboration with prominent companies, nonprofits, and academic partners. In our curriculum, environments are seen as integrated and dynamic systems that require the design of interactions at multiple levels of scale. Students acquire a diverse set of skills that includes a deep understanding of spatial relationships, designing with and for emerging, multi-media technologies and an understanding of the cognitive challenges presented by multi-modal spaces.

On September 8, 2022, Carnegie Mellon announced a $275.7 million partnership with the Mastercard Foundation to support Carnegie Mellon University Africa in Kigali, Rwanda. Carnegie Mellon's Kigali campus provides graduate-level study in engineering and artificial intelligence. The International Style, with its rejection of historical tradition and its emphases on functionalism and expression of structure, had been in vogue in European settings since the 1930s. It came late to the Carnegie Mellon campus because of the hiatus in building activity and a general reluctance among American universities to abandon historical styles. By the 1960s, the International Style was adopted to accomplish needed expansion quickly and affordably with the swelling of student ranks in the aftermath of the GI Bill in 1944.

Leaders in the field increasingly collaborate to develop products, services, and systems that significantly impact ways of life, which places great responsibility on designers. In the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon, we understand the important roles that design can and should play in the world. Carefully considering the implications of our actions, we practice a values-centered approach to design and strive to develop thoughtful solutions to improve the quality of life for people and the planet, today and in the future. The MPS program is a two-semester program to which only MA students can apply.

We’re excited that you’re interested in applying to our undergraduate degree program in the School of Design. Emily Zhou (BDes '21) Emily is a multidisciplinary designer with an interest in tangible interactions + technology. CMU’s School of Design offers bachelors, master’s and doctorate programs that consistently rank among the best in the world. We are one of only a select number of schools in the U.S. offering a PhD in design. Last October, Raelynn O’Leary and Ashley Deal attended the EPIC Design Conference to present a case study outlining the design research process they followed to inform an app to support new moms in the postpartum period.
